 Marion Military Institute Fast Facts

 MMI traces it origin back to 1842, as the original Howard College.  Marion Military Institute was founded in 1887 and was granted a charter by the State of Alabama in 1889.
 The MMI Chapel is a national landmark, registered with the National Register of Historical Places.
Historically, MMI was a private institution.  In 2006, through an act of legislation, the Institute became a member of the Alabama Community College System.
Today MMI is one of five junior military colleges in the nation authorized to commission qualified cadets as officers in the U.S. Army after only two years of collegeClick here to learn more. 
MMI is consistently one of the top U.S. Army ROTC commissioning programs in the nation.  Forty-two young men and women received their commission during 2008.
U.S. Cadet Command has named MMI in their list of colleges experiencing the largest growth in Army ROTC enrollment in the past few years.
MMI generates the largest number of ROTC cadets simultaneously serving as members of the National Guard and Reserve component.  Click here for more information on the SMP Program.

The General Bruce K. Holloway Service Academy Preparatory (SAP) Program instituted in 1910, is a designated preparatory program for the five U.S. Service Academies:
  • U.S. Military Academy at West Point
  • U.S. Naval Academy
  • U.S. Air Force Academy
  • U.S. Coast Guard Academy
  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
 As of fall 2009, ninety-four of MMI's former cadets were enrolled in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, making the total number of former MMI cadets in the five U.S. Service Academies 200 plus.
The 2008-2009 SAP class, the largest in MMI's academy prep program since World War II, achieved 78 appointments to US Service Academies last spring.  Click here to view academy appointment history.
MMI is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and has a unique Honor and Respect Education Program.
Student to Faculty Ratio = 20:1
 Woodrow Wilson is responsible for the current MMI colors and mascot.  Wilson, then president of Princeton University, was the Government Day Speaker at the Institute in 1905. Following his speech, MMI's colors were changed to orange and black and the athletic teams were called the “Tigers” in honor of Wilson and Princeton University.
The 2009-2010 MMI Intercollegiate Sports Program will host Men's Baseball, Tennis, Basketball, NCWA Wrestling, and Club Rugby as well as Women's Softball, Tennis and new this fall - Soccer.
Did you know both MMI Wrestling Coaches are two-time Olympic wrestlers?  Between them they can claim two Olympic Medals, one World Medal, and induction into six Hall of Fames.  In addition, Coach Dave Hazewinkel carried the Olympic Torch in its relay to the 1996 Olympic Games.
The 2008-09 MMI Wrestling Team finished 4th out of 84 teams at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Tournament, where six Marion wrestlers earned All-American status.
  The MMI Corps has become a well known participant in Birmingham, Alabama's Annual Veterans Day Parade (recognized nationwide as the oldest and largest Veterans Day celebration).  In the Fall of 2008 the MMI Corps captured two trophies for their participation:  The Raymond Weeks Trophy and the Visiting Band Trophy.
