MMI Wrestling Coach Named Coach of the Year; Team Ranked #3 in Nation
With an almost perfect wrestling season and numerous awards to his credit, MMI wrestling coach Jim Hazewinkel has been named the “Coach of the Year” by the NCWA. The MMI wrestling team is ranked 3rd in the nation in points, won the NCWA Duals Tournament in January, and is hoping to win the NCWA National Championship (March 11-13).
“I am very happy to receive this award and I give the credit to the men on our team for doing an outstanding job at the National Duals Tournament,” Coach Hazewinkel said after receiving the award. “I’m just grateful that we won the Tournament as we were not favored to win, and grateful to MMI for giving me this opportunity.”
The MMI wrestling team is ranked 1st in the nation in the coaches polls and has been exceptional since coming back from Christmas Break in December. With 1248 points in the NCWA and wins against Auburn and Alabama in the last month the MMI Tigers have proven themselves locally as well as nationally with 16 of their wrestlers competing in the upcoming National Tournament.
Jim Hazewinkel was a member of the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Wrestling Olympic Teams and was also a member of the U.S. World Team in 1966, 1967, 1969, 1970, and 1971. Coach Hazewinkel was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” in 2005 and into the NAIA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1975. Jim coaches at MMI with his twin brother Dave, who also has numerous awards and medals for wrestling to his credit.
