DESCRIPTION:As part of MMI’s Center for Leadership Distinguished Speaker Series\, Congresswoman Terri Sewell will present in the Chapel on March 28\, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. \nCongresswoman Terri A. Sewell is in her fourth term representing Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.  She is one of the first women elected to Congress from Alabama in her own right and is the first black woman to ever serve in the Alabama Congressional delegation. \nCongresswoman Sewell sits on the exclusive House Ways and Means Committee and the distinguished House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence charged with the oversight of our national security. She is the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on the Department of Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture\, a key subcommittee on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. \nIn her short time in Congress\, Sewell has held several leadership positions\, including Freshman Class President in the 112th Congress.  This current term\, she was selected by Democratic leadership to serve as a Chief Deputy Whip\, and sits on the prestigious Steering and Policy Committee which sets the policy direction of the Democratic Caucus.  Congresswoman Sewell is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and is Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition.  She is also Co-Chair of the newly formed Voting Rights Caucus. \nA proud product of Alabama’s rural Black Belt\, Congresswoman Sewell was the first black valedictorian of Selma High School. She is an honors graduate of Princeton University and Oxford University in England and received her law degree from Harvard Law School.

An alumnus of Marion Military Institute\, he became the first Special Assignments Correspondent for CNN.  He originated the term SOFTWAR which is defined as: “The hostile use of global television to shape another society’s will by changing its view of reality.” \nLynne Russell is a journalist\, author and trailblazer. At CNN/CNN Headline News for eighteen years\, she holds the distinction of being the first woman to anchor a regular primetime network nightly newscast. She is a licensed Private Detective and holds two black belts in the Korean-American street fighting martial art Choi Kwang Do. \nBreakout sessions will begin at 2:30 p.m. following their presentation.

DESCRIPTION:As part of MMI’s Center for Leadership Speaker Series\, Dr. Sebastian Lukasik will present on World War I on October 27\, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Lukasik is Assistant Professor of Comparative Military Studies in the Department of Airpower at Air Command Staff College. He received a Ph.D. in American history from Duke University. He has served as Course Director for the Leadership and Warfare course and the Airpower I course. Prior to arriving at ACSC\, he taught as a visiting instructor at Duke University and North Carolina State University. In addition to teaching courses in the ACSC core curriculum\, he offers elective classes on Combat Motivation and Morale in Historical Perspective\, Cultural History of Flight\, and war and society in the era of the World Wars.

DESCRIPTION:MMI’s Distinguished Speaker Series presents Mayor Walt Maddox to discuss Crisis Leadership on October 11\, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel. \nWalter Maddox was sworn in for his fourth term as Tuscaloosa’s 36th Mayor on May 22\, 2017. He has been nationally recognized for his crisis management following April 27\, 2011\, when an EF-4 tornado destroyed 12 percent of the City and severely damaged or destroyed 5\,300 homes and businesses. \nIn 2012\, Mayor Maddox was named Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County for his strong\, decisive and comforting leadership. \nMayor Maddox is a Tuscaloosa native and graduated from Central High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and master’s degree in Public Administration from UAB.
