1st Volunteer Firefighters Certified at MMI

In May, MMI celebrated another milestone with its Alabama Fire College (AFC) partnership: recognizing its first firefighter contingent (5 individuals) to be certified at the volunteer level along with two EMT-certified students. In attendance was AFC’s Jeff Roberts, Region 5 Coordinator, who congratulated the group in front of the entire Corps of Cadets. Since launching its first responder program in Fall 2017, MMI has been offering cadets the option to take firefighting and EMT courses through Tuscaloosa-based AFC as an extracurricular program. Cadets choose the course(s) pathway appropriate to their objective and are provided with a dedicated AFC instructor teaching night classes in Marion, necessary equipment, and skills tests conducted on the AFC campus. Continuing to grow and develop, the MMI First Responder program has already passed several marks:
  • Establishment of the Fire Lieutenant Edwin E. Passmore 1st Responder Scholarship to assist in AFC tuition costs
  • Serving with the Marion Volunteer Fire Department
  • Hiring of First Responder Program Manager SGM Jerome Jones, USA (Ret)
  • Conducting rescue training on MMI property
  • 9 total certifications earned in two academic years
