College announces new Chief Instructional Officer, Retired Air Force Lt. Col.

MMI Announces New Dean, Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel

On June 1, Marion Military Institute (MMI) welcomed Lt Col Timothy T. Ullmann, U.S. Air Force (Retired) to its senior staff as Chief Instructional Officer. In this role, he will serve as academic dean for the MMI Corps of Cadets and will be responsible for the daily operation of the academic program to include oversight of the faculty and for strategic academic initiatives.  

Lt Col Ullmann comes to MMI from his most recent position as Director of Professional Development for the Auburn University (AU) Harbert College of Business. Over the past four years at AU, he led a division that provided professional development skills for 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students for successful entry into the workforce.

Prior to AU he served in numerous Air Force positions stateside and abroad as a chaplain and action officer.  His final assignment was at the USAF Test and Evaluation Center, Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), CA, where he served as Executive Director (Commander), Programs and Operations. Some of his earlier Air Force positions include Deputy Command Chaplain, U.S. Air Forces Central Command, Al Udeid AB, Qatar; Director, Policy, Guidance and Curriculum, USAF Air University, Maxwell AFB in Montgomery; Associate Director, Research and Development Division, USAF Air University; Senior Director, Programs and Operations, Ramstein AB, Germany; Associate Director, Organizational Plans, Programs and Operations, Baghdad, Iraq; Associate Director, Plans, Programs and Operations, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq; and Senior Director, Basic Military Training and Project Procurement, Lackland AFB, TX. 

His military awards and recognitions include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service medal with 7 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, US Army Combat Action Badge, XVIII Airborne Corps combat service badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 bronze campaign stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with 1 silver campaign star, Office of the Secretary of Defense badge and HQ U.S. Air Force badge.   

Since 1998, he has also served as an independent consultant in the field of professional development, leadership development, strategic planning, organizational management and public relations. Lt Col Ullmann holds a BS in Education from the University of Colorado and several advanced degrees: Master’s of Divinity (Concordia Seminary), MA in Organizational Management (George Washington University), MS in Operational Science (Air Command and Staff College); and a postgraduate diploma in Eastern Orthodox Theology (Orthodox Church in America).

His civic associations include Military Officers Association of America, Team Edwards Officers Club Business Advisory Board, America’s Promise Alliance volunteer, AU Veterans Resource Center Board, and Sons of the American Revolution.

Lt Col Ullmann and his wife, Shanna, make their home in Tuscaloosa and Marion.  His step-sons, John Thomas (20) and Jake (17) live in Auburn and attend Auburn University and Auburn High School respectively.  Lt Col Ullmann is a Canon in the Anglican Church in North America and served as Vicar to the Auburn mission.  He has led humanitarian relief efforts to the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Uzbekistan, Iraq and Afghanistan.  In his spare time he and his wife enjoy gardening, SEC football (Roll Tide) and spending time with good friends.
