Manalo Represents Guam at Davis Cup

In November, Marion Military Institute's Bryce Manalo traveled to Bahrain to represent Guam in the Davis Cup, the premier international team event in men's tennis. He competed in two singles matches in Group V. Cadet Manalo is a sophomore tennis player for the MMI Tigers and enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program.

Cadet Manalo describes the experience: “The Davis Cup experience was definitely something I needed, as it allowed me to see where my tennis level currently stands and what areas need improvement. I take a lot of pride in representing the island where I was born and raised. Davis Cup Group V was played in Bahrain, and it was a very unique experience competing in a different environment and under unfamiliar conditions, as well as being exposed to a new culture and different foods.

“The competition was tough. Everyone was playing and fighting for their nation, so the overall level was very high. From the two singles matches I played, I gained a clearer understanding of my current level and what I need to do to reach the next stage. The experience also motivated me to continue working hard on my tennis.

“I was selected because I was one of the players from Guam with an active UTR and was actively competing in college tennis. We also had to play challenge matches against other Guam players trying out for the team. Although I was initially named as an alternate, I was added to the team when another player was unable to attend.

“Overall, this experience was extremely enjoyable, and I am committed to working hard to continue improving my game.”
