Navy ROTC Prep

MMI is the only 2-year institution to offer this new program!

MMI’s pilot NROTC Prep Program provides a Navy commissioning (NROTC) opportunity for highly motivated and exceptional candidates.

First-year MMI cadets will have the opportunity to compete for a follow-on 4-year NROTC scholarship to many of the 19 participating universities for 20-21.

For the pilot program, five Universities agreed to consolidate their alternate NROTC Preparatory Program 4-year scholarships and make them available to eligible MMI NROTC Self-Prep Cadets.  The five universities are Old Dominion University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Norwich University, Tuskegee University and the University of San Diego.   At the end of the year, the universities and Navy have committed to ensuring at least five NROTC scholarship offers are made to eligible MMI NROTC Self-Prep cadets.

The MMI NROTC Prep Program provides participating cadets a rigorous one year academic and military program making them competitive for the scholarship while providing them a solid academic foundation for success at their follow-on sponsoring university.

NOTE:  The NROTC Prep Program is a 5-Year college track. The first year at MMI, and another four years on a National Scholarship as full Midshipman to one of the participating universities.

NROTC Prep Sponsored Cadets. Participating universities have the option of sending their NROTC Prep Candidates to MMI for their prep-year.  These universities provide financial support to these candidates for this prep-year at MMI.  Sponsored cadets return to their sponsoring university on four-year NROTC scholarships upon successful completion of their prep year at MMI.

NROTC Prep Self-Sponsored Cadets. MMI cadets, not sponsored by a participating university, may join the self-sponsored program.  As such, they compete for 4-year NROTC scholarships at participating NROTC Prep universities.  Once all open NROTC scholarships are filled at MMI NROTC Self-sponsor partner universities, any remaining eligible cadets may also compete for open slots at the 14 other NROTC Prep participating universities.

Self-Sponsored Cadets:

Acceptance into the program:

• ACT score of 18 composite (minimum 18 in Math & 17 in English) or above, or
• SAT score of 950 (475 Math / 475 Evidence Based Reading & Writing) or more with both a math and a critical reading scores above 475.
• Verify future service eligibility by obtaining a pre-screen by the NROTC Preparatory Programs Office

To Remain “In Good Standing” in the MMI NROTC Prep Program and be Eligible for an NROTC Scholarship:

• Successfully complete a Department of Defense medical exam
• Successfully complete NROTC indoctrination training (waived for AY20/21 due to pandemic). Normally conducted the summer after your self-prep year.
• Maintain greater than a 2.8 GPA
• Pass the Navy’s Physical Fitness Assessment meeting NROTC minimum requirements.
• At the end of the preparatory year, obtain a positive recommendation from the Director of NROTC Preparatory Programs by fully participating in MMI’s NROTC prep program and maintaining good standing for conduct and academics.
• Agree to pursue a technical degree (NROTC tier 1 or tier 2 major)
• Earn acceptance to and be designated by an NROTC Prep university with available follow-on NROTC scholarships.
