Cadet-Organized Relay for Life raises $4K for the American Cancer Society

Captain Courageous, Superwoman, Catwoman, and Superman—these were just a few of the stars running in the 5K “Superheroes Fighting Cancer’ Relay for Life on Friday, March, 4, on the Marion Military Institute campus.  Sponsored by the cadets of MMI’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), who organized the afternoon’s activities as part of a service learning project, the relay was followed by a mini-carnival at MMI’s Robinson Stadium, featuring a cakewalk, games, cotton candy, and prizes.

At the conclusion of the carnival, Jacob Durant was awarded a 1st Place medal for winning the race, after which QEP Director David Tipmore introduced Susan Staniszewski, the mother of Cadet Austin Chapman; she spoke of her experience as a breast cancer survivor and praised the current research being done to battle the disease.  Before the participants walked a “Victory Lap Against Cancer” around the track as Cadets Cody Pendleton and Madeleine Colwell played a trumpet duet of “Amazing Grace,” Tipmore announced that the event had raised more than $4,000.  The proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
